Senior CWI: What It Takes & Why It Matters

Introduction

If you’ve already earned your Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential and built a solid foundation in welding inspection, you may be ready for the next level: Senior Certified Welding Inspector (SCWI). The SCWI credential represents the highest certification level offered by AWS, recognizing advanced technical and supervisory expertise. It’s more than a title — it’s a mark of leadership and achievement.

What Is a Senior CWI?

An SCWI is defined by AWS QC1 and AWS B5.1 as a professional qualified to:

  • Oversee and manage welding inspection personnel
  • Develop and implement quality assurance programs
  • Interpret and apply welding codes and standards
  • Audit fabrication shops and assess compliance
  • Train CWIs and quality‑control personnel
  • Approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs), and welder qualifications

Work Experience Requirements

To qualify as an SCWI, you must:

  • Be certified as a CWI for at least six of the past eight years
  • Have 15 years of welding‑related experience in at least three of the following:
  • Procedure development
  • Control and application of base metals
  • Welder or welding‑operator experience
  • Detection and measurement of weld discontinuities
  • Planning and application of repair welding
  • Written procedure preparation
  • Qualification of welders and procedures
  • Application of welding codes and standards
  • Quality‑control operations

Required Endorsements

AWS requires candidates to hold four specific endorsements:

  1. Welder Performance Qualifier (WPQ1)
  2. Welding Procedure Qualifier (WPQ2)
  3. Nondestructive Coordination (NDEC)
  4. Welding Coordination & QA

California Welding Institute offers SCWI‑led prep courses for each of these to ensure you’re fully test‑ready.
