Many people are surprised to learn that AWS is a volunteer‑driven organization. It’s powered by people in the welding industry — from students and educators to shop supervisors and experienced professionals — all working together to advance the trade. Everyone has a role to play, and by getting involved, you can make a real impact on both the organization and the welding industry as a whole.
Join Your Local AWS Section
AWS is organized into geographic “Sections” — local chapters that host meetings, educational events, certification support and networking opportunities. There are more than 200 sections across the U.S. and internationally.
Why Join a Section?
- Stay updated on local welding issues and trends
- Attend hands‑on demos, code seminars and shop tours
- Connect with peers, employers and mentors
- Earn Professional Development Hours (PDHs)
- Help guide the next generation of welders
Visit aws.org/sections and enter your ZIP code to find your local chapter.
Serve on an AWS Committee
Committees are the engine behind AWS codes, standards and certifications. These working groups are made up of industry professionals and welcome fresh perspectives.
Types of Committees:
- Code Committees (e.g., AWS D1.1, D17.1)
- Technical Advisory Committees (TACs)
- Education and Certification Development
- Foundation and Scholarship Panels
Express interest at standards@aws.org or explore opportunities at aws.org/committees.

AWS hosts regional and national events year‑round including:
- FABTECH – North America’s largest metal forming & welding event
- Welding Education Conferences
- Student Competitions & Skills Contests
- National Welding Month (April) Activities
These are great chances to learn, network and get inspired.
